The Species
Coffea eugenioides is one of 120 to 130 species in the genus Coffea. It is a diploid species with 22 chromosomes (like Robusta and most other Coffea species, unlike Arabica which doubled to 44). Moreover, Eugenioides grows as a small, delicate tree or shrub in the understory of montane forests, typically at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,500 metres. It is native to the highlands of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, and western Kenya.
Compared to Arabica and Robusta, Eugenioides is physically unimposing. The trees are smaller, the leaves are smaller, the cherries are smaller and the yields are dramatically lower. What Does Eugenioides Taste Like?
A cup unlike anything else in the coffee world. The experience is so different from Arabica that it challenges assumptions about what coffee can be:
- Intense sweetness. The defining characteristic. Eugenioides tastes sweet in a way that no Arabica variety, not even the sweetest natural Gesha or Pink Bourbon, can match. Furthermore, the species also contains lower concentrations of chlorogenic acids, which are another major source of bitterness. The result is a cup with essentially no harsh or bitter qualities.

How Eugenioides Created Arabica
Eugenioides’ most important contribution is not the cups it produces today but the species it helped create tens of thousands of years ago.
In the highlands of what is now southwestern Ethiopia, a Coffea eugenioides plant cross-pollinated with a Coffea canephora (Robusta) plant. The offspring inherited 22 chromosomes from each parent but then doubled its chromosome count to 44, becoming a tetraploid. This new organism could no longer easily cross back with either parent. A new species had emerged: Coffea arabica.
Moreover, the traits that each parent contributed are visible in Arabica today:
- Eugenioides: sweetness, lower caffeine (relative to Robusta), lower bitterness, delicacy, the capacity for complex aromatic development, and adaptation to higher altitude. Eugenioides in Colombia
Eugenioides became known as a drinkable coffee in Colombia. A small number of producers, drawn by the species’ extraordinary cup quality, obtained Eugenioides seeds and planted them at altitude in Colombia’s highland growing regions.
The most famous is Saúl Biscocho at Finca Inmaculada in Cauca. Biscocho planted Eugenioides alongside Gesha and other premium varieties, processed it with the same care and innovation, and offered it to the specialty market. The response was immediate. Baristas recognised that Eugenioides offered something no Arabica could replicate: a sweetness so pure and a bitterness so absent that it created an entirely new category of coffee experience.
Eugenioides lots from Finca Inmaculada have appeared in World Barista Championship routines, where competitors used the species to showcase flavours that conventional Arabica could not deliver. Moreover, other Colombian producers in Huila and Nariño have followed Biscocho’s lead, planting small Eugenioides lots alongside their Arabica offerings.
However, commercial Eugenioides production remains tiny. The species produces very low yields, the trees are delicate, and the market is limited to a narrow segment of specialty buyers willing to pay extreme premiums. Why Eugenioides Is So Different from Arabica
Eugenioides and Arabica are different species, and their chemistry reflects this:
- Caffeine. Eugenioides contains roughly 0.2 percent caffeine by weight. Arabica contains roughly 1.2 percent. Robusta contains roughly 2.2 percent. Moreover, caffeine is one of coffee’s primary bitter compounds, so Eugenioides’ near-absence of caffeine explains its near-absence of bitterness.

- Chromosomes. Eugenioides has 22 chromosomes (diploid). Arabica has 44 (tetraploid). This doubled genome gives Arabica a larger genetic toolkit and contributes to its greater flavour complexity.

Competition use has driven awareness and demand for Eugenioides, though the species remains too rare and too low-yielding for anything approaching mainstream availability. Where Eugenioides Grows
- East Africa (native range). Eugenioides grows wild in montane forests across the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, and western Kenya. Wild Eugenioides populations have never been commercially harvested at any scale.

Arabica inherited sweetness and delicacy from Eugenioides. It inherited vigour and resilience from Robusta. The combination produced a species with more flavour complexity than either parent, which is why Arabica dominates specialty coffee while neither parent does on its own.
