Meet the Producer: Jose Esteban Madrid

Coffee is a family tradition for Jose Esteban Madrid. He grew up surrounded by coffee, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. After receiving land from his father, Jose planted Pacas and Parainema coffee varieties on his farm, El Plan. At first, he sold his coffee on the conventional market. However, the unpredictable prices pushed him to change his approach.

In 2008, his brother Franklin won the Cup of Excellence competition. This victory not only brought the Madrid family recognition but also sparked global interest in their coffee. Green buyers sought their beans from all over the world. The Cup of Excellence win was a turning point for the family, changing their coffee business for the better.

Santa Barbara Region

The Santa Barbara coffee-growing region is one of the top coffee-producing areas in Honduras. Located in the western part of the country, near the Guatemalan border, the region offers the perfect environment for growing coffee. The high altitudes (1,200 to 1,800 meters above sea level), volcanic soil, and mild climate help produce high-quality Arabica coffee. These factors allow the beans to mature slowly, which enhances their complex flavor profiles.

Santa Barbara coffee is known for its fruity, floral, and chocolatey notes. The region’s farmers focus on sustainable practices and prioritize quality over quantity. As a result, Santa Barbara has become a key coffee-producing area in Honduras, which is one of the largest coffee exporters in Central America. The unique combination of climate, altitude, and soil gives the coffee its distinct character, making it a favorite among specialty coffee drinkers worldwide.
