Moccamaster Coffee Ratio

How to brew Moccamaster

Moccamaster is a very simple and easy way to make filter coffee. There is not much to it which is why I added a little spice to the photo and chose a lovely green.

  • Filter paper
  • Ground coffee
  • Filtered water
  • Time

Of course there are many elements at play in this mix

  1. Choice of coffee
  2. Grind size
  3. Type of water
  4. Length of time

All of these will have an effect on the final brew which is why we stick to as many control items in this mix as possible so we do not have to ponder the outcome so heavily. In other words, pick the variable you can control and take charge. For example, we usually brew litre batches using a grind size similar to course salt at a ratio of 1:15. Simply divide 1000 by 15 to get your coffee volume in grams.

Coffee Ratio

  • 1:15 for our single origins
  • 1:16 for our limited edition single origins
  • 1:17 for our competition grade coffee

Less than 1:15

  • Produces a stronger, more intense cup with greater body and potentially more bitterness and acidity.

Greater than 1:15

  • Produces a milder, lighter cup with reduced bitterness and acidity.
